COLOMBO : Zahira College Colombo, commonly referred to as the “Kings of Football,” dethroned the much-fancied Alighar National School with a thrilling 1-0 victory at the Sri Lanka Schools U20 National Football Championship 2024, held on February 27th at the Race Course Stadium. With this resounding triumph, Zahira College was rightfully crowned the undisputed champion!
Both teams showcased scintillating football, demonstrating remarkable energy, endurance, and unwavering determination throughout the match. It was an absolute spectacle, keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats.
Last year, Zahira suffered a heartbreaking defeat in a nerve-racking penalty shootout, but this time, they exacted sweet revenge, skillfully dethroning Alighar and reclaiming their rightful glory.
The decisive, solitary goal was netted by Aakil Amanulla, son of the legendary Mohamed Amanulla, a dazzling former Zahirian who captained the Sri Lanka national football team.
This momentous goal epitomized Zahira College’s fearless, relentless, and attacking approach as they brilliantly orchestrated play, controlled possession, and held their ground until the final whistle. Zahira’s rock-solid defense, led by the formidable Abdullah, was impenetrable—truly as solid as the Rock of Gibraltar.
At Zahira, football is more than just a sport—it is a passion deeply woven into the fabric of the school’s rich history for over a century. Zahirians play the game with an almost instinctive zeal, as naturally as a duck takes to water. Over the decades, the College has produced a galaxy of exceptionally gifted footballers who have proudly represented the national team, earning a stellar reputation and showcasing their prowess on the grand stage.
Zahira College’s football coach, Imran, and his dedicated assistant, Fazul Rahuman—both former national players—made immense contributions. Their tireless efforts instilled tactical discipline, mental resilience, and peak fitness in the players, ultimately shaping them into a formidable force.
In the aftermath of this spectacular victory, a tidal wave of euphoria swept through the Zahira fanbase, as jubilant supporters erupted in joyous celebrations, dancing ecstatically under the fluttering green, white, and maroon flag!
Meanwhile, St. Joseph’s College clinched third place, while Hameed Al Husseinie College finished fourth. The grand event was attended by distinguished dignitaries, including Sri Lanka Football’s Head Coach, Mr. Abdullah Al Mutairi, and its President, Mr. Jaswar Umar, along with many other notable figures.
