



MALE : The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Maldives celebrated the 78th Anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka on Wednesday 04th February 2026 with a flag hoisting ceremony and a diplomatic reception.
The flag hoisting ceremony which was held at the High Commission premises with the participation of the Sri Lankan community living in Maldives also included singing the national anthem, lighting of the traditional oil lamp, conduct of multi-faith religious observances, reading of independence day messages of President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, address of the gathering by the High Commissioner, and serving of Sri Lankan refreshments. With the support of the members of the community, the Mission facilitated those who could not physically attend the event due to work commitments to witness proceedings online.
Addressing the members of the community, High Commissioner Hassen highlighted the respect and confidence earned by Sri Lankans in Maldives as a trusted and talented set of expatriates. He also appreciated their contribution towards the development of our economy.
The diplomatic reception which was organised with the generous sponsorship of Sri Lankan and Maldivian business communities was held at Hotel Barcelo Nasandura with the attendance of government and business sector officials of Maldives, diplomatic corps and members of the community.
High Commissioner Hassen in his welcome address recalled the strong bonds of friendship based on historical ties between Sri Lanka and Maldives which have in recent times been reinforced with high level visits. He also referred to the significant progress made by the Sri Lanka Government in achieving economic stability and building a clean and corruption free political culture.
The Chief Guest of the event, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives Dr Abdulla Khaleel reiterated that Maldives and Sri Lanka share a historic and unbreakable bond that is built on centuries of cultural ties and deep-rooted friendship.
A blend of Sri Lankan and Maldivian music, raffle draw and an array of Sri Lankan cuisine were major highlights of the event.
