COLOMBO : To mark the World Environment Day, two Dewata trees were planted at the Dewatagaha Mosque located near the Colombo Town Hall on Saturday.
The two trees were planted by Chairman of the Dewatagaha Mosque, Reyyaz Salley in the presence of Colombo Deputy Mayor,Al Haj M.T.M Iqbal and leader of opposition and Municipal Councillor Mohammed Manzil.
Speaking to Colombo Times, Salley thanked Colombo Municipal Commissioner Roshini Dissanayake for the donation of these two trees which are supposed to be endangered species. “ The commissioner voluntarily donated these two plants since our mosque is well-known in town as ‘Dewatagaha Mosque,” he said , recalling that for the past 12 years I was looking for these plants unsuccessfully. He also thanked the Municipal engineers for their cooperation in the tree planting campaign on the World Environment Day.
The Commissioner also took part in a tree planting campaign in the vicinity of the mosque in the morning on Saturday.Speaking to Colombo Times, Dissanayake said that she was successful in finding two rare plants of Dewata for the mosque and she was able to arrange the planting of 100 Ayurvedic medicinal plants in the center-island opposite the mosque to mark the World Environment Day. “ We have initiated a programme to plant 100,000 trees within the CMC limits,”she said, adding that some 3,400 plants have already been planted from April this year.
