COLOMBO – The National Institute for Nephrology Dialysis and Transplantation (NINDT) conducted a series of events to mark World Kidney Day which fell on March 13.
This year’s theme for the World Kidney Day was ‘Are Your Kidneys OK? Detect early, protect your kidneys’. Dr. Anupama De Silva – Consultant Nephrologist at the National Institute for Nephrology Dialysis and Transplantation – Maligawatta.
The sub theme was the felicitation of kidney donors as this years main event for the Institution.
The event was held on Friday March 14 at Serendib Grand Colombo under the theme ‘Gift of Life – Celebrating Heroes’. The main highlight of the event was the felicitation performances such as songs and dances presented by the health staff for the kidney donors.
The chief guest for the event was Vidyajothi Professor Rizvi Sherriff and the Guest of Honor was Dr. Kamani Abeyaweera.
The significance of both of them were that Prof. Rizvi Sherriff is a kidney recipient and Dr. Kamani is a altruistic kidney donor.
During the event a patient information booklet drafted by Dr. Anupama De Silva on instructions to follow for patients with kidney diseases was also launched. This book contains information both in Sinhala and Tamil languages. This booklet will be available free of charge for kidney diseases patients attending clinics at the NINDT.
The event also saw a drama skit performed by staff members signifying the importance of deceased kidney/organ donation.
At the end of the programme all donors received a token of appreciation and a gift hamper courtesy of CL Synergy.
PThe National Institute for Nephrology Dialysis and Transplantation appointed a committee co chaired by Dr. Anupama De SIlva – Consultant Nephrologist and Dr. Malaka Amarasinghe – Vascular and Transplant Surgeon to organize events in lieu of World Kidney Day 2025. The secretary of the said committee was Dr. Rajeev Menon Gengatharan.
