


COLOMBO :The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Colombo celebrated Iraq’s “Sovereignty Day”, which fell on 30thSeptember, to mark the final withdrawal of International Coalition Forces from its territory by holding a simple, but well attended ceremony at the Embassy on Tuesday, 6thOctober 2026, presided over by the Charge d’Affaires & Head of Mission, Mohamed O.J. Al-Maswdi.
Speaking on the occasion, Al-Maswdi, recalled Iraq’s ancient civilization and its contribution to humanity, stating, “Today, we proudly remember Iraq’s long and rich history, its remarkable civilization, and its important contributions to the region and to the world. Throughout history, it has been a center of knowledge, learning, culture, and human development. Its ancient civilization made contributions that continue to influence humanity to this day.”
Highlighting the significance of the ‘Sovereignty Day’ celebration, the Iraqi Head of Mission said that, “the restoration of Iraq’s national decision-making and security authority, and the full transfer of security responsibilities to the Iraqi armed forces following the end of the international coalition’s military presence on Iraqi territory. The celebration of sovereignty is therefore a celebration of a nation that is proud of its history, confident in its future, and open to the world through friendship, cooperation, and peace.”
In his concluding remarks, Al-Maswdi expressed his vision for his nation’s future, stating, “Modern Iraq looks to the future with confidence and hope. It remains committed to strengthening its national institutions, protecting its independence, promoting security and stability, and developing strong relations with its Arab brothers, as well as with its friends and partners in the international community.”
Former Minister, Imtiaz Bakeer Markar was the Chief Guest at the event, which was attended by politicians, former Ambassadors, prominent businessmen and well-wishers of Iraq.
