RAJAGIRIYA — Buddhist devotees in Sri Lanka celebrate the Poson Full Moon Poya Day this year in a grand manner giving priority to religious observances.
The Sri Jayewardenepura Poson Kalapaya (Poson Zone) inaugurated at Obeysekerapura, Rajagiriya on Friday June 21 was decorated with lanterns, entertained visitors with Buddhu Bakthi Gee and treated them with palatable food ar Dansals at the Obeysekerapura Street, Rajagiriya . The show is expected to run till 23rd June.
Many of the most devoted pilgrims spent hours in quiet meditation to honor the traditions of Buddhism. The Poson Festival is celebrated throughout the island, where huge electronically lit Pandals are showcased in various city.
Poson is one of the most important religious events for the Buddhists in Sri Lanka. The day marks the introduction of Buddhism to the Island by Arahat Mahinda in the third century BC. It is believed the Great Arahat preached the Dhamma to King Devanampiyatissa, the then ruler of the country, in Mihintale, Sri Lanka.
To mark the Poson houses are illuminated with Lanterns, and lights to commemorate the day in a festive manner.
