COLOMBO — Victory Day, celebrated on the 9th of May, is one of the most important national holidays in Russia. The anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany is the second most widely celebrated holiday after New Year. It is the highlight of the Russian calendar and an integral part of Russian culture. The day honors the immense sacrifices made by soldiers and civilians alike. It is a day of deep remembrance and immense pride, where veterans are celebrated as national heroes. We also need to bare in mind that 27 million heros were lost during this time.
Thereby, in honor the 80th Anniversary of Victory Day, the Russian House in Colombo together with the Russian Embassy n Sri Lanka unveiled as significant plaque at the Colombo Public Library on Tuesady April 29 with the presence of the Levan Dzhagaryan, Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Sri Lanka and Maldives, Madam Maria Popova, Counselor of the Russian Embassy in Sri Lanka and Head of the Russian House in Colombo, Dr. Saman Weerasinghe, Former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia, General Secretary of the SLRFS and chairman of the Centre of Russian geographical society in Colombo and Commodore Senaka Hanwella (Retired), Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Defense.
Across Russia, the day is marked with grand military parades, wreath-laying ceremonies, and the famous march where citizens carry photos of their relatives who served during the war.
