COLOMBO — The Dr. A.M.A. Azeez Commemoration Meeting and the Memorial Oration was held on Wednesday March 9 at the Ghaffoor Hall, Zahira College, Colombo.
Dr. B.A. Hussainmiya, Fulbright Professor and Scholar-in-Residence, Florida International University, Miami and Former Professor in History, University of Brunei, delivered the keynote speech on “Muslims and Education: In Search of Excellence”
In his speech, Dr Hussainmiya recalled that Dr Azeez not only helped Zahira College to reach its peak in Muslim education but also he joined hands with the late Al haj M I M Naleem to set up Jamiah Naleemiah which now produces qualified Muslim scholars in par with the current standards of education. “ At Zahira, Azeez was well respected as a educationist , devoted principal and an able administrator.”
The Meeting was jointly chaired by Khalid M. Farouk, President of the Dr. A.M.A. Azeez Foundation and Amhar Shareef, National President of the All Ceylon YMMA Conference.
The publication “A.M.A. Azeez’s Contribution to Agriculture in the East” was released at the meeting. His efforts to boost local food production during the second world war, made Ampara District the granary of the East. The book highlights Dr. Azeez’s greatest achievements surpassing others.
The First copy of the book handed over to Dr. B.A. Hussainmiya by a former student of Dr. A.M.A. Azeez , former teacher of the Zahira College and Senior Journalist P. Balasingham.
Azeez’s son Ali Azeez, Former Minister A.H.M. Fowzie, Former Ambassador of Iran M.M.Zuhair PC, Zahira College Principal Trizviiy Marikkar, Chancellor South Eastern University President Counsel Faisz Musthapha, YWMA President Mrs. Fawaza Thaha, Colombo Times chief editor Mohammed Rasooldeen ,school principals, teachers, old boys of Zahira College, representatives of Muslim Organizations and Media personnel were also present.Past president of the All Ceylon YMMA Conference Ashroff Rumy proposed the vote of thanks .
