COLOMBO : Environment Minister Hafiz Naseer Ahamed said here on Sunday, June 5 that he is against the abolition of executive president in Sri Lanka.
The minister made this statement to Colombo Times on Sunday, just two days before the parliament’s session scheduled on Tuesday, June 7, where the new moves are being made to discuss the reduction of powers of the country’s president.
Ahamed said that he was also speaking to the press as Deputy Leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and insisted that the executive president who is elected by the people from a special poll should have special powers to overcome bureaucracy and help expedite the implementation of important matters for the greater good of the nation.
“ The Executive President, who is elected by the people of the entire country, is a position of responsibility to the people of the country and does not represent only one region, ” Ahamed said, stressing that the executive presidency should be in Sri Lanka and he opposes the abolition of executive powers of that post.
Ahamed, the Deputy Leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, is the only Member of Parliament to contest and win from the Tree symbol of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress.
