LONDON : An Iftar event was organised by the Sri Lanka High Commission (SLHC) in the UK in association with Council of Sri Lankan Muslim Organisations (COSMOS UK) recently at the SLHC premises.
The special guest at this occasion was Nusrat Ghani, Minister of State at the Department for Business and Trade. Senior members of the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) and various High Commissioners and Ambassadors from Muslim countries also graced this occasion along with affiliate members and Executive Committee members of COSMOS UK and other British Sri Lankan organisations.
Rohita Bogollagama, High Commissioner, welcomed the guests and shared the significance of the Iftar gathering at the High Commission and the community spirit of Ramadan. H.E. also highlighted the President’s Fund for Gaza Children and requested support for this fund.
Shakeer Nawas, President of COSMOS UK, highlighted the charitable contributions and engagements of the British Sri Lankan Muslim community during the holy month of Ramadan. Shakeer also thanked the High Commission Staff and sponsors of this event for organising it.
Past General Secretary of Cosmos UK and Past President of Sri Lanka Islamic Association, Bro. Rahee Mohamed Saleem, winner of the Lenny Awards 2024 and a regular contributor to British Charity Comic Relief and other charities, shared his journey in charitable engagement after recovering from his life-threatening injury, which was an inspiring experience for the captivating audience.
Sheikh Thalha Siddiq, Imam of Sri Lanka Muslim Cultural Centre Harrow, highlighted the significance of implementing the teachings of the Quran in our lives on this occasion.
Recitation of the Quran was performed by Hafiz Zaid Kiyas, and the Call for Prayer (Azan) was given by Bro. Asif Thashrif, both of whom attend Masjid Al Jannah Madrasa in Slough. A beautiful Nasheed was performed by BMS Nasheed competition winner Sister Huda Mohamed Rizme.
The Ifthar event concluded with prayers and dinner.
