COLOMBO : Day before yesterday, Wednesday, Dec 25, as I stood on the bustling landside near Wellawatte supermarket, a simple act turned into a glaring civic inconvenience. Pressing the Pedestrian Operated Signal (POS) button, also known as the push-button crossing signal, to beckon the green light for safe passage, I was met with silence—no signal, no assurance, only malfunction. Left to chance, I waited until a small flock of fellow pedestrians formed, and we crossed together, braving the rush.
This is not an isolated incident; the city of Colombo seems plagued by dysfunctional POS systems, leaving pedestrians vulnerable at zebra crossings. To the authorities entrusted with urban mobility—restore these vital aids promptly and prioritize pedestrian safety
