Today is the 26th of March, the great Independence and National Day of Bangladesh. On this
day in 1971, the fight to establish an independent, sovereign Bangladesh finally began. The
mass people of this country waged the Liberation War against the Pakistani armed forces.
Consequently, Bangladesh achieved independence at the cost of lives of hundreds of
thousands of martyrs in a long nine-month bloody Liberation War.
On this day, I remember with deep respect the heroic martyrs of the great Liberation War, all
leaders of the independence movement, the valiant freedom fighters, the mothers and sisters
who lost their honour, and the freedom-loving people of this country, whose
supreme sacrifices and contributions brought us this independent Bangladesh. I also respectfully
remember all the martyrs of the mass uprising of July-August 2024.
I pay my profound gratitude to the members of our diaspora and the diplomats who played an
important role in shaping global public opinion in favour of Bangladesh during the Liberation
War and later in achieving international recognition. I also deeply acknowledge the enormous
contribution of our foreign friends in the emergence of independent Bangladesh.
The ultimate goal of our independence was to end the oppression of the then ruling class and
to eliminate all forms of exploitation and economic, social and political discrimination. To make
this happen, people from all spheres including students, farmers, and workers fought to
establish independent Bangladesh in 1971 through a long, united movement and war. Their
dream was to build a discrimination-free Bangladesh, where every citizen would enjoy the
benefits of independence equally.
Unfortunately, as the aspiration of independence was not fulfilled even after five decades, the
mass uprising took place in July-August 2024. The students and the people sacrificed their lives
fearlessly in this uprising to establish their rights to vote, uphold justice, eliminate
discrimination and ensure equal opportunities for all. As a result, we have once again got a
golden opportunity to make our independence meaningful through building an exploitation-
free, developed country. The current Interim Government, led by Honorable Chief Adviser
Professor Muhammad Yunus, is determined to utilize this opportunity. Let us all embrace the
spirit of independence and build a truly independent, exploitation-free and prosperous
Bangladesh.
On this glorious day, I extend my sincere greetings to the Bangladeshi diaspora staying in
different parts of the world and are contributing to keep the country’s economy running. I
thank all the members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and our missions abroad who have
been working with firm commitment to uphold our national interests and enhance the
country’s image globally.
