In line with the Clean Sri Lanka programme, the renovation project of the Maradana Railway
Station, implemented under the Dream Destination initiative, was launched this Monday morning Sept.(15)
under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
In line with the government’s strategy to create “A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life,” a
national initiative has been launched to modernize 100 railway stations across the country.
The programme, implemented through public-private partnerships by the Ministry of Transport,
Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation together with the “Clean Sri Lanka” programme, aims to
provide a sustainable, modern and standardized public transport system. Its objectives include
enhancing public amenities at railway stations and transforming them into safe, comfortable and
attractive spaces, contributing to a better quality of life for the people.
The project aims to create a clean and attractive railway station system across the country that
ensures the safety and comfort of all passengers, including those with special needs.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who participated in the ceremony marking the launch of
the Maradana Railway Station modernization project, unveiled the commemorative plaque. The
President also conducted an inspection tour of the station, visiting several areas including the
control room.
During the event, the Railway Department was also introduced to the new Sinhala computer
font, “Ruhunu Kumari.”
Maradana Railway Station, historically one of the most significant railway stations in Sri Lanka,
is considered the second largest station in the Colombo District. The modernization work is
planned to be carried out in a manner that preserves its historical and architectural heritage.
At the event, Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Bimal Rathnayake noted
that neglect of the railway service and the challenge of establishing a quality railway service in
this country has been aggravated by railway employees becoming victims of the outdated
political culture.
The Minister stated that the programme has been implemented by bringing together railway trade
unions, passengers, local communities and the private sector, with the aim of maintaining an
active and efficient railway service that meets the daily transportation needs of the public.
