Illegal assets, narcotics seized
* 1,097 sent to rehabilitation centres
COLOMBO :During the special operation ‘Yukthiya’ conducted by the Sri Lanka Police and its Special Task Force (STF) a total of 13,666 suspects have been arrested as of yesterday morning, of which 717 suspects are being further investigated based on detention orders.
Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said the operation would continue during the festive season as well in a manner that would not disturb the religious activities of those celebrating Christmas.
Thalduwa said however the number of Policemen participating in the raid will be reduced during this period as some of them have to be assigned to other duties.
Operation ‘Yukthiya’ started on the December 17 until yesterday (24) morning, the following suspects and quantities of narcotics have been arrested in the operations conducted all over the island, police said.
The narcotics that were seized had nine kg of heroin, 4.746g of ICE, 272 kg of Cannabis and 944,651 Cannabis plants, Hashish 989g, Mawa 117 Kg, Hash 35Kg, Thule 3kg, Kush 532 grams and 65,024 narcotic pills. Also, 174 suspects are being investigated for illegal assets and 1,097 drug addicts have been sent to rehabilitation centres.
1,107 suspects who were on the list of registered suspects of the Police Narcotics Bureau and the Special Bureau were arrested in this operation.
Police have seized several illegal assets and large stocks of narcotics during the operations.
