COLOMBO : The World Environment Day is on 5th June, observed across the globe. It is one of the biggest annual events organized by the United Nations (UN) to generate awareness about the significance of nature.
The theme this year is ‘Reimagine. Recreate. Restore.’ as this year marks the beginning of the United Nations Decade on ‘Ecosystem Restoration’.
As per information shared by UN, an ecosystem loss is depriving the world of carbon sinks, like forests and peatlands, at a time humanity can least afford it. Global greenhouse gas emissions have grown for three consecutive years and the planet is one pace for potentially catastrophic climate change.
‘Ecosystem Restoration’ means preventing, halting and reversing this damage – to go from exploiting nature to healing it. Ecosystem restoration can take many forms such growing trees, greening cities, rewilding gardens, changing diets or cleaning up rivers and coasts.
Pakistan is the global host for the day to highlight the importance of ecosystem restoration this year.
This World Environment Day 2021 will kick off the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a global mission to revive billions of hectares, from forests to farmlands, from the top of mountains to the depth of the sea.
The United Nations Assembly established World Environment Day in 1972. World Environment Day was first observed in 1974 in the United States under the theme of ‘Only One Earth’.
On World Environment Day, let us join hands to make peace with nature, restore planet earth for the benefit of the future generation.
