COLOMBO – The government has taken measures to reduce the water tariff for domestic consumers by 7 percent. A gazette has been published reducing the water tariff for government hospitals by 4.5 percent and for temples and places of religious importance by 6.3 percent.
The relevant gazette notification has been issued by Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development Minister Jeevan Thondaman and the new tariff revision will be effective from August 21. Apart from the Samurdhi beneficiary and estate houses, the domestic and condominium category, Schools, Religious, Government Approved Charitable Institutions and Other Nonprofit Organizations category are included in this new water tariff revision.
The water tariff between 0-05 units in the domestic category has been reduced by Rs.10 from Rs.60 to Rs.50 per unit, and the tariff charged for 76-100 units has been reduced by Rs.20 from Rs.270 to Rs.250 per unit. The water tariff charged per unit Rs.60 in the Schools, Religious, Government Approved Charitable Institutions and Other Nonprofit Organizations category has been reduced by Rs.5 and the new fee is Rs.55.
A unit of water used for government hospitals had been charged Rs.100 per unit. However the fee for a unit for government hospitals has been reduced by Rs.5 making it only Rs.95 per unit .
