COLOMBO : Dr. Kifaya Ifthikar ,General Secretary of MEI Foundation and its medical coordinator Dr. Mohamed Juraij Mohamed Nawshad, met with Mohammed Rasooldeen, Editor of Colombo Times on Tuesday to discuss the forthcoming plans of the NGO.
MEI, which stands for motivation, encouragement, and inspiration, is an NGO based in Sri Lanka that works towards poverty alleviation and health and sanitation.
The first project is a school shoes donation project, wherein school shoes will be distributed to children from government schools and in return each child will bring a home grown plant to give the NGO. The plant will be circulated to a home based gardener or needy farmer. The project is called “*Soles for Seeds*.” Through this initiative they instill a sense of entrepreneurship amongst young minds whilst also ensuring environmental friendliness. They have launched this project in two schools in Kandy and are now expanding to reach selected schools in Colombo.
The second initiative underway is their *Dengue Defense: Awareness & Care* project. Through this 3- phase-project they will be the first to raise awareness on dengue, then support community cleanups in collaboration with local public health inspectors and finally end with dengue prevention methods like disturbing mosquito repellant to hospitals and surrounding areas. The launch of this project is said to start this week.
