
COLOMBO : The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Mr. Marc-André Franche, together with UN Peace and Development Resident Advisor Mr. Patrick McCarthy, met with the Hon. Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, on 3rd of June 2025 at the Parliament premises. The Secretary General of Parliament, Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera, also participated in the meeting.
Discussions focused on the work of the current Tenth Parliament, the new program for promoting democracy and good governance, and opportunities for enhanced cooperation between the Parliament of Sri Lanka and the United Nations.
During the meeting, the Hon. Speaker shared his vision for establishing a Parliamentary Education and Research Centre to support members of Parliament, provincial councils, local government representatives, and researchers. He also emphasized the importance of creating a dedicated legal division within Parliament to strengthen legislative functions.
Further topics of discussion included the current political landscape, strategies to strengthen democratic institutions, the importance of combatting bribery and corruption, and innovative approaches to fostering national reconciliation in Sri Lanka.
Mr. Franche also briefed the Hon. Speaker on the upcoming visit to Sri Lanka by the High Commissioner of the International Commission on Human Rights.
