COLOMBO (News 1st); The fallout from the deadly violence at Sri Lanka’s Negombo Prison has deepened further, with two inmates who were transferred to other prisons following the clash reportedly losing their lives.
Prisons Department Spokesperson A.C. Gajanayake said one of the inmates transferred to Boossa Prison died after being admitted to the Karapitiya National Hospital due to an illness.The other deceased was identified as an inmate who was moved to the Angunukolapelessa prison.
The latest deaths come in the aftermath of the violent confrontation that erupted inside Negombo Prison between groups allegedly linked to drug trafficking and organized crime, an incident that has already left dozens dead and injured.
Meanwhile, 36 individuals injured during the Negombo Prison violence continue to receive treatment at the Negombo District General Hospital.
Hospital authorities said three of those injured remain in intensive care units and are receiving critical medical treatment.
In addition, 20 inmates who were previously receiving treatment at the Negombo Hospital have been transferred to the Welikada Prison Hospital for further medical care and monitoring.
Earlier in the day, another prison officer injured in the violent clash between two groups linked to drug trafficking and organized crime inside Negombo Prison has succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased officer had been receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital after sustaining critical injuries during the violence.
With the latest fatality, the number of prison officers killed in the incident has risen to eight.
The overall death toll from the Negombo Prison violence has now climbed to 29, comprising eight prison officers and 21 inmates. News first
