COLOMBO : Surangi the elephant at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage gave birth to twin male babies on Tuesday,August 31.
The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage in Pinnawela was established on February 16, 1975, and so far 71 baby elephants have been born in captivity at this facility.
”Surangi” had previously given birth to a calf named ”Kanaka” on 24.05.2009.
The first of her twin calves was born at around 4.30 am and the other calf was born around 10 am today.
“Surangi” and her twins are reportedly in good health.
According to an official of the Wild life Department said the twin elephant birth was the first such birth in Sri Lanka’s history among the country’s registered domesticated elephants.
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a popular tourist attraction with the largest herd of more than 75 captive elephants in the world.(Pix New First)
