COLOMBO : There seems to be a widespread misunderstanding about the Muslim dress — the Abaya. Recently, I had a friendly discussion with a former Minister’s wife, who is also a close friend of mine, regarding this very topic. While we often exchange views on various current issues, I felt the need to clarify the real reason why Muslim women wear the Abaya.
For the benefit of non-Muslim readers, in Islam, a woman is required to cover her entire body except the hands and the face. Covering the face, however, remains a matter of differing opinion among Islamic scholars.
It’s important to note that Islam does not prescribe a specific garment — any dress that meets these modesty requirements is acceptable. The Abaya, therefore, is not mandatory, but has become popular because it is simple, comfortable, and fulfills the religious guidelines of modesty.
I would also encourage dress designers to explore cost-effective and convenient alternatives that meet these modesty standards, giving Muslim women more choice while respecting their faith. I hope this clarifies the misunderstanding surrounding the Abaya.
