The “One Million Volunteers” program, organized by the National Youth Services Council (NYSC), was officially launched at the Bindunuwewa Youth Corps Center.
During the launch, youth volunteers were briefed on the specific projects planned for the Badulla District and subsequently deployed to their respective worksites. A wide range of community service activities are scheduled to take place throughout the Badulla District through Sunday, Dec. 28
The two-day operation includes the repair of disaster-damaged schools, the cleaning of irrigation systems and roadways, entertainment programs for residents in welfare centers, donation of medicines to hospitals, and the distribution of essential supplies to children and adults at safety centers.
Addressing the gathering, the Chairman of the National Youth Services Council and Director General of Youth Affairs in Sri Lanka, Attorney-at-Law Supun Wijeratne, stated that this is the second phase of the “One Million Volunteers” initiative, following the successful labor mission recently held in Chilaw. He emphasized that this is a prime opportunity for the youth to intervene at their maximum capacity to support those affected and help rebuild the nation.
The Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs, . Dinindu Saman Hennayake, highlighted that the country cannot be allowed to decline again due to this disaster, especially at a time when the economy was slowly stabilizing. He extended his gratitude to all the young men and women who stepped forward to contribute to the nation-building effort.
Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure, Samantha Vidyaratne, noted that thanks to this voluntary labor, schools in the Badulla District will be able to reopen on February 5th. He remarked that this disaster has clearly demonstrated that volunteerism is a significant pillar in rebuilding the country.
