RIYADH : The unfortunate accident which took the lives of five passengers travelling in a bus by falling from an overgrown tree caught the attention of all Sri Lankans, even those living abroad.
The message I received from Mr.A.R.Azeez from California, U.S.A read ‘Mr. A.H.M. Fowzie the one time Mayor of Colombo and a friend of mine, when he was the Mayor he got the trees bordering Baudalokha Mawatha in Colombo,7, and the vicinity trimmed and stabilized. He was vehemently opposed by some and he was forced to stop. I feel if this attempt was successfully carried out and the practice continued, the unfortunate accident at Duplication Road could have been avoided.’
Now in Saudi Arabia the Green Riyadh project is on and there is a vision to plant 10 billion trees. The trees chosen are to suit each location and overgrown trees are duly trimmed not allowing them to be an obstruction to pedestrians or motor vehicles.
