COLOMBO : Teacher’s Day is more than a day to express gratitude to those who stand before classrooms each morning. In Sri Lanka, it is an opportunity to recognise the thousands of teachers who quietly shape the minds, character and future of our nation.
Every successful doctor, engineer, lawyer, scientist, public servant, entrepreneur and community leader has, at some point, been guided by a teacher. The influence of a good teacher often extends far beyond textbooks and examinations. Teachers inspire discipline, curiosity, confidence, compassion and a sense of responsibility towards society.
Sri Lankan teachers carry a particularly important responsibility. Despite limited resources, overcrowded classrooms and increasing demands on the education system, many continue to serve with dedication. They teach children from different social, economic and cultural backgrounds and help them discover their potential.
Yet appreciation alone is not enough. If we genuinely value teachers, their professional dignity, working conditions and welfare must receive greater attention. Adequate resources, continuous professional development and fair opportunities for career advancement are essential for a strong education system. Teachers should also be protected from unnecessary administrative burdens so that they can concentrate on their primary responsibility — teaching.
Sri Lanka cannot build a prosperous and united future without investing in education. And investment in education must begin with investment in teachers.
At a time when technology and artificial intelligence are rapidly changing the way young people learn, the human role of the teacher remains irreplaceable. Technology can provide information, but a teacher provides guidance, encouragement, wisdom and values.
On this Teacher’s Day, let us therefore move beyond ceremonial speeches and flowers. Let us recognise teachers through meaningful policies and genuine respect.
The classrooms of today are shaping the Sri Lanka of tomorrow. Behind every promising student stands a teacher who believed in that student’s potential.
To honour teachers is, ultimately, to honour the future of Sri Lanka.
