COLOMBO : Justice Minister Ali Sabry, PC yesterday (02) informed the House that he will soon receive a report on bringing former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran back to Sri Lanka.
Minister Sabry explained that the report is prepared by the Attorney General and it will include any development regarding the said matter.
He also also said that he will make a statement, based on the report, in Parliament after getting permission from the Speaker of the House to do so.
Minister Sabry made these observations in reply to Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Lakshman Kiriella during the Oral Questions round.
Minister Ali Sabry in reply to SJB MP Hesha Withanage stated that the Judicial Service Commission has set up a digital online information system to obtain information on cases pending in the District Courts islandwide.
The Minister said that 231,506 cases are pending in the District Courts islandwide and out of these 4,620 cases are more than 20 years old.
The Minister said that the Judicial Commission is collecting information on such cases in the District Courts and that information on each case could not be provided without establishing a digital database. He pointed out that the Government would never interfere in the affairs of the judiciary.(CDN)
