COLOMBO : Today is the day when Ceyon became ‘indepedent’ 76 years ago. It took the name of Sri Lanka officially with the passage of the First Republican Constitution in 1972. The country was historically known by several names including Lanka, Tambapanni, Sihaladeepa, Eelam, Ilankai, Zeylan, and Serendib.
The popular Tamil poet மகாகவி Mahakavi Bharathi in one of his famous poem particularly stressed:
“சிங்களத் தீவினிற்கோர் பாலம் அமைப்போம்”
“Let’s build a bridge to Sihaladeepa.”
The Second Republican Constitution, inter alia, introduced a system of governance with the President as the Chief Executive. Many amendments to the Constitution and multiple crises later, the country today continues to grapple with myriad challenges on all fronts.
The post-colonial state’s trajectory has been replete with avoidable tragedies, ‘avoidable’ only if its political leaders and others in positions of influence had placed themselves above board and acted in fairness. ‘Avoidable’ if the citizens of Sri Lanka had only been diligent enough in electing to office, persons and parties who had a vision for the country beyond ‘self’ and stood firmly and uncompromisingly for unity, peace and freedom.
The following lines were penned in 2022 as Sri Lanka marked its 74th anniversary of ‘independence’, with much pomp and pageantry days before all hell broke loose on economic, social and political fronts.
தாயே உன் முதுமை கண்டு
கிலேசம் ஏதும் கொண்டதில்லை
மட்டில்லா மகிழ்ச்சி
மனம் நிறைந்த வாழ்த்துக்கள் அம்மா!
உன் எழில் வதனம் போன்ற
சுகந்தமிகு சோலையை
சீரிய தண்ணிலவை
எங்குமே கண்டிலேன்
எவராவது கண்டுள்ளீரா?
உன்
வாஞ்சையான கரங்களின் வருடலில்
இளநெஞ்சின் இறுகிய அரவணைப்பில்
மென்பஞ்சு மடியின்
மெதுமையான தாலாட்டில்
வளர்ந்தவன் யான்.
வரவு செலவு பார்க்காத
வனப்புமிக்க சீமாட்டி நீ!
இன்று
உலக அரங்கின் ஒரத்தில் அமர வைத்து யாசகம் செய்ய உன்னை
யார் யாரோ நிர்பந்திக்க…
கயவர்கள் கண்டு கொள்ளா
காத தூரம் எங்கோ உன்னை
கொண்டு செல்ல ஆசை அம்மா
