COLOMBO – Sri Lanka has signed a bilateral agreement with the Government of Denmark to restructure USD 39 million of outstanding debt, marking a key milestone in the country’s External Debt Restructuring Process.
The Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development said the agreement underscores the Government’s ongoing commitment to restoring debt sustainability, concluding the restructuring process successfully, and revitalising the national economy.
Following bilateral discussions after the Memorandum of Understanding with the Official Creditor Committee (OCC), Denmark has agreed to provide debt relief by rescheduling the outstanding amounts.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, on behalf of Sri Lanka, and Mr. Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Minister for Foreign Affairs, representing the Government of Denmark. The rescheduled debt under this agreement totals USD 39 million.
The Ministry emphasized that the agreement will further strengthen the longstanding bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Denmark. “The Government of Sri Lanka extends its sincere appreciation to the Government of Denmark for its continued support and cooperation,” the statement added.
