World Habitat Day, proclaimed by the United Nations, is being commemorated today (October 5).
This year’s World Habitat Day is being observed under the theme “Adequate Housing for All.” The main national event to mark the occasion is scheduled to be held today at Temple Trees, under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Dr. H.M. Susil Ranasinghe.
A National Housing Week is also being conducted islandwide in conjunction with World Habitat Day. Accordingly, 5,000 houses constructed across the country with government assistance are scheduled to be handed over to the public today.
The Government aims to construct and hand over a further 30,000 houses by December 31, while the Ministry has implemented a number of programmes aimed at ensuring every individual has access to a safe and secure home
