COLOMBO – The Sri Lanka Federation of University Women ( SLFUW) held its ‘Members with Families Day’ on Sunday September 10 in the Auditorium at its Headquarters in Colombo.
SLFUW President. Col. Dr. Udula Krishnaratne began her address with a warm welcome to all present. Commenting on the long history of the SLFUW, Dr. Krishnaratne paid tribute to Mrs. Clara Motwani, American born educationist, who set it up nearly 83 years back. She thanked all members, non-members and well-wishers who helped in numerous ways. The day’s program included the presentation of scholarships three needy female undergraduates, one each from the Faculties of Law and Indigenous Medicine of the University of Colombo, and one from Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna.
Awards were also presented to felicitate three members for their outstanding contributions to SLFUW Mrs. Anadi Balasingham, Retired Senior Journalist (Lake House) and Consultant Tamil Mirror Newspaper of Wijeya Newspapers, awarded by Dr. Udula Krishnaratne. Mrs. Chinta Munasinghe, Retied Commissioner of Inland revenue, and former President of SLFUW, (in her absence accepted by Ms. Rohini Madiwake) presented by Mrs. Sheela Ebert a former president of SLFUW and Mrs. Neelia Fernando – specialist in the development and maintenance of information systems in the National Science Council. The award was given away by Ms. Jayanthi Liyanage, a former SLFUW President. A cash donation was also handed over to the Visually Impaired Foundation by Dr. Krishnaratne. Apart from these items of appreciation goodwill, it was a fun-filled day with games and competitions as well as music, singing and dancing with prizes and surprises galore, and gifts for everybody. A joyous atmosphere prevailed throughout.
