COLOMBO : A charity project ‘Retro Evening’, an evening of music with the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s golden oldies hits and a sumptuous buffet dinner, organized by the Sri Lanka Women’s Conference (SLWC) to raise funds to assist the Society for Upliftment & Rehabilitation of leprosy affected persons (SUROL) was held at the BMICH successfully recently.
Professor Tissa Vitarana, former Member of Parliament, was the Chief Guest at the ‘Retro Evening’ that saw a crowd packed to capacity to enjoy the toe-tapping songs by the musical group, Vision and Damayantha. The evening ended with a dinner buffet spread catered by the BMICH that added spice to the event and was a delight to the food connoisseurs amongst those who attended the Retro Evening.
Sri Lanka Women’s Conference offered to help the Society for Upliftment & Rehabilitation of Leprosy affected persons (SUROL) by awarding a donation, enabled through ‘Retro Evening’, in support of SUROL’s latest major project to assist those disabled by leprosy and their families who are identified to be one of the most vulnerable in our society. SUROL has embarked on a major project to distribute Christmas hampers to approximately 250 such families, in the month of December.
SUROL in their major effort to help those identified families during the Christmas season is attempting to raise funds from multiple donors to meet their requirement of Rupees 3 million this year to cover the cost of the food hampers they have envisaged to donate to the disabled leprosy persons and their families who are living below the poverty line and amongst the most affected by the loss of livelihoods & the spiraling cost of essentials.
The President- SLWC, Indra Nilaweera, Retro Evening Fund Raising Project Chairperson- SLWC, Sonia Vitarana, Secretary- SLWC, Veeranthi Wijemanna, Treasurer- SLWC, Shanthi Balasubremaniam, and Asst. Treasurer SLWC, Mala Sabaratnam and all other SLWC Committee members who were newly elected two months ago made great strides through their efforts to make the Retro Evening a success, and to achieve their set targets for the SLWC which is marking its’ 88th year of service to the community, this year.
