COLOMBO: Muslim organizations gathered at a Peaceful and Silent VIGIL at the Independence Square on Saturday, March 5th to urge the government not to touch personal laws of the Muslims when the ‘One Country One Law’ is implemented in Sri Lanka,
“ Let Our actions speak louder than words,”STAND TOGETHER TO PROTECT OUR PERSONAL LAWS” were the slogans displayed at the silent protest/
Muslim and civil societies in Sri Lanka have appealed the Government not to change the Muslim personal laws since they are a part of their culture and life and had paved the way for a peaceful coexistence with other communities.
Speaking on the occasion, Azath Salley, former Western Province Governor and NUA Leader said that Muslims will never ever allow their personal laws to be repealed.” If the government wants let them amend these laws to keep with the changing times but they cannot be abolished totally,” he said. Recently, Salley said that Sri Lanka foreign minister G L Peiris pledged that his government would not infringe the rights of Muslim personal laws. Salley said that this commitment ws made in the presence of 27 Muslim ambassadors where Prime Minister Mahinda Rakapaksa was also present,
