COLOMBO : Leader of the All Ceylon Makkal Congress and Member of Parliament Rishad Bathiudeen has written to Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, urging immediate diplomatic intervention to ensure the safety and secure the earliest return of Sri Lankan activist Sameera Mahboobdeen, who is presumed to be in Israeli custody following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters.
In his letter, MP Bathiudeen expressed deep concern over reports that Ms. Mahboobdeen was among hundreds of international humanitarian activists travelling as part of a peaceful aid mission to Gaza when Israeli military forces intercepted the flotilla.
He stressed that the uncertainty surrounding her condition, legal status, and current whereabouts has caused serious concern among Sri Lankans both locally and overseas.
MP Bathiudeen called on the Foreign Minister to immediately engage Sri Lanka’s diplomatic missions and all relevant international channels to verify Ms. Mahboobdeen’s wellbeing, ensure consular access if required, and take all necessary steps to facilitate her safe return to Sri Lanka without delay.
“The protection and safety of Sri Lankan citizens overseas remain a solemn responsibility of the State, especially in circumstances involving detention and humanitarian vulnerability,” MP Bathiudeen stated in his communication.
He further noted that timely and decisive diplomatic action would not only provide reassurance to Ms. Mahboobdeen’s family but also demonstrate Sri Lanka’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens wherever they may be.
MP Bathiudeen expressed confidence that the Foreign Ministry would act swiftly and decisively in this urgent humanitarian matter.
