NEGOMBO: Residents in four areas in Negombo are trapped in their own homes due to heavy flood caused by unprecedented rains on Thursday.
The water logged areas that have come include Gomezwatta, Rubberwatta, Sellakanda and Deniyawatta.
The places were flooded since the Diya Ela, a lake, has overflown its banks near the Negombo-Katana border.
In Gomezwatta and Rubberwatta areas, the roads were submerged by water by more than five feet in some places. Household goods and appliances have been damaged due to flood water entering the houses here.
The residents in the area could not move from their places because of the travel restrictions imposed by the government.
Periyamulla Divisional Social Service Movement and well-wishers have taken steps to provide cooked food to the people affected affected by the floods.
The Secretary at the Negombo Divisional Secretariat, Aisha Pathiranana told Colombo Times that relief work as well as clearing the places from flood waters have been undertaken to assist the people.
