The Colombo Grand Mosque announced here on Wednesday evening that the cresent for the month of Shawwal was not sighted on Wednesday evening, hence the Eid-ul-Fitr Ramazan Festival will be celebrated on Friday, May 14th .
The president of the Grand Mosque,Thaufiq Zubyr told Colombo Times that he had summoned the committee on Wednesday night to determine the day of the festival in the island. The meeting held at the Colombo Grand Mosque was attended by Hilal (Crescent) Ulamas from the Colombo Grand Mosque, All-Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama, Memon Hanaffi Mosque and officials from the Islamic Affairs Department,
Also the Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs informed Trustees of all Mosques that Ramazan Festival prayers not permitted in Mosques and all Mosques are to be kept closed on the Festival day.
Muslims are requested to pray at home with their families and restrict their movements due to Covid 19 pandemic on advice of the Health Authorities and the Wakf Board of Sri Lanka.
In Saudi Arabia,The moon-sighting committee in said on Tuesday, May 11, that the crescent of the month of Shawwal could not be sighted from the Tamir observatory, meaning the month of Ramadan this year will be 30 days and the first day of Eid Al-Fitr will be celebrated on Thursday (May 13).
