COLOMBO – A group of activists from across Sri Lanka gathered outside the Presidential Secretariat in Colombogathered Tuesday morning on August 5 to protest the government’s recent decision to grant free visa entry to Israeli nationals. The demonstration, led by the Free Palestine Movement Sri Lanka, was joined by members of various civil society organisations who expressed deep concern over the ethical, political, and security implications of the policy.
Protesters cited the ongoing genocide in Gaza as a primary reason for their objection, pointing out that even Israeli human rights organisations have acknowledged the scale of atrocities and are calling on the international community to apply economic and political pressure on the Israeli government.
Beyond the broader political implications, activists also raised serious concerns about the conduct of Israeli nationals arriving in Sri Lanka under this new visa arrangement. Reports have surfaced of individuals engaging in narcotics trafficking, operating unregistered businesses, and establishing extremist religious centres. Violations of local laws, particularly regarding coastal conservation regulations, were also highlighted.
The protest drew attention to Arugam Bay, a popular tourist destination that many say is being transformed under increasing Zionist influence. According to demonstrators, the presence of Zionist-linked individuals in the area has led to intimidation of tourists from other countries, physical altercations, and a growing climate of fear. There are allegations that these actions are taking place with the tacit support of local law enforcement and organised mafias, further compounding the issue.
A letter was formally submitted to the authorities during the demonstration, urging the government to revoke the free visa policy and take immediate steps to investigate the situation in Arugam Bay. The protestors called on the state to uphold the rule of law, protect Sri Lanka’s sovereignty, and ensure that the island remains a safe, inclusive, and lawful destination for all.
Today’s demonstration reflects a growing public outcry over what many see as an alignment with a state accused of war crimes, and a failure to safeguard national interests in the face of foreign influence.
