COLOMBO — The Deputy Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni stated that Professor Rezvi Sheriff was a distinguished senior medical officer and an exceptional teacher who contributed immensely to the medical field by mentoring and producing many doctors.” He was also known as a good friend and a kind-hearted person who treated everyone with equality and respect. His passing is an irreparable loss to the country and the entire medical community,” he added. The Minister conveyed his deepest sympathies to his family.
Professor Rezvi Sheriff, a distinguished physician and widely regarded as the pioneer of nephrology in Sri Lanka, passed away at the age of 77. He served as the Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine and was also the Head of the Department of Clinical Medicine.
He was honored with the title “Vidyajothi” in recognition of his outstanding contributions to medicine and education.
His funeral was held at the Kuppiyawatta Muslim Burial Grounds, with the participation of Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rizvie Salih, Members of Parliament, doctors, and religious leaders including All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama President Ash Sheikh M.I.M. Rizvi Mufthi. Media personnel, as well as friends and family members, were also present, with a large gathering attending to pay their final respects.
