COLOMBO : All-Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association said here on Saturday,Aug.3, the price of a loaf of bread is likely to increase to Rs. 300 due to the soaring prices of wheat flour in the market.
According to reports, there is a shortage of wheat flour in the country at present.
Vendors said the wholesale price of wheat flour per kilogram stands between Rs. 350 – Rs. 400. Meanwhile, whereas the retail price stands at Rs. 360 – Rs. 380.
Bakery owners have been severely afflicted by the prevailing shortage of wheat flour in the country and the soaring prices of the products.
The association of small- and medium-scale bakery owners is urging the government to intervene to control the soaring wheat flour prices and the shortage.
Meanwhile, a discussion was held between Prima Ceylon (Pvt) Limited and Serendib Flour Mills (Pvt) Limited and Minister of Trade & Food Security Nalin Fernando on Friday in this regard.
Speaking to Ada Derana, the lawmaker said the two companies agreed to release the wheat flour stocks in their possession to the market.
