COLOMBO: Chairman of the Public Health Inspectors Union of Sri Lanka, Upul Rohana said that a 2022 survey conducted by the Public Health Inspectors (PHI) found that 18% of restaurants and hotels in Sri Lanka served food unfit for human consumption, but 55% of food stations were in very good condition while 27% were in satisfactory condition.
He said that steps were being taken to improve the standing of the 18% unhygienic food stations to at least category B quality, but high employee turnover made practical measures hard to implement as constantly changing staff made it difficult to provide training and subject them to regular health check-ups.
