COLOMBO: Hundreds of well-wishers welcomed the actor-turned politician Ranjan Ramanayaka who came out of the jail on a presidential pardon, while the labour and foreign employment minister who came to receive Ranjan was hooted away from the scene by an angry crowd.
Oppositon Leader Sajith Premadasa and minister Nanayakkara chaperoned Ranjan who was coming out of the Welikada Prisons in the evening on Friday ,Aug 26.
Speaking on behalf of an angry crowd, one person told press that the people are disappointed at the manner in which many protesters were treated under emergency regulations.” We want all the arrestees to be released unconditionally,” one of them said .
Premadasa said Ranjan will be appointed as legislator to the parliament should a vacancy occur among the nominated members appointed by the SJB
On his part, Ranjan said he was really delighted to see the immense support from the people and thanked all from the president to a ranking officer who helped him in his release.He said : “ I will always be with the people of my country.”
