COLOMBO : With a looming fuel crisis, the question is simple—why are we not using bicycles more?
For short-distance travel, those who can cycle should make the shift immediately. Even a modest transition can lead to substantial national fuel savings. This is not merely an option—it is a practical necessity in difficult times.
The initiative taken by the Colombo Municipal Council, where the Mayoress V C Balthazaar participated in the “Cycling Sunday” ride mid last year promoting healthier lifestyles and greener transport, was a commendable step.
However, such efforts must not remain symbolic. They should be expanded into a sustained and well-structured public campaign encouraging daily bicycle use.
Why cycling makes sense now:
- Immediate Fuel Savings: Significantly reduces reliance on scarce and costly fuel, while eliminating time lost in queues. The need for QR code-based fuel access becomes largely unnecessary.
- Health Benefits: Promotes fitness and cuts long-term medical expenses.
- Zero Pollution: A clean, environmentally responsible mode of transport.
- Low Maintenance Costs: Far cheaper to maintain than motor vehicles.
- Reduced Traffic Congestion: Fewer vehicles mean smoother roads for all.
- Affordable Daily Transport: Ideal for short commutes and errands.
In times of crisis, practical solutions must take precedence over convenience.
Cycling is not just an alternative—it is a responsible choice we must embrace.
