COLOMBO ; President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has assured that Sri Lanka will not face a recurrence of an economic crisis similar to that of 2022.
He made these remarks while attending an event to recommence construction work on the Nindavur Cultural Centre, a project that had remained stalled for 24 years.
Addressing the gathering, the President acknowledged the challenges posed by the current global environment, including the ongoing conflict situation in the Middle East, describing it as an external crisis. However, he stressed that the government possesses the capacity to effectively manage such external pressures.
The President stressed on the administration’s broader objective is to build a strong and resilient economy while ensuring that racism has no place in the country. He further highlighted the importance of holding corrupt individuals accountable and establishing a system where the law is applied equally to all citizens.
Dissanayake noted that curbing the excessive privileges enjoyed by politicians was a key expectation of the public mandate that brought the current government to power. He stated that the government has already undertaken significant steps in this regard
He reiterated that ensuring equal application of the law remains a central responsibility of his administration, warning that failure to achieve this under the present government would make it unlikely to be realised under any future administration.
The President further emphasised that the rule of law will be enforced irrespective of power, wealth or status, affirming that no individual would be above the law.
He added that measures have already been taken to abolish certain privileges, including those related to pensions, in a bid to reshape the role of politicians into one that prioritises public service.news first
