
COLOMBO : The Embassy of Nepal in Colombo successfully organized a series of events to commemorate the 2570th Buddha Jayanti and Vesak Day, reflecting the deep-rooted civilizational and spiritual ties between Nepal and
diplomats including the Ambassadors of Indonesia, Bangladesh, representatives from international organizations, scholars, Buddhist clergy, mindfulness practitioners, and civil society representatives to explore the role of mindfulness in leadership, diplomacy, and public policy.
Ambassador of Nepal to Sri Lanka, Dr. Purna Bahadur Nepali, welcomed the gathering and highlighted the shared Buddhist heritage of Nepal and Sri Lanka. He emphasized that mindful leadership offers a practical pathway to ethical governance and regional harmony. Dr. Tara de Mel, Executive Director of BALPP, introduced the Mindful Leadership Regional Initiative aimed at integrating mindfulness into leadership development across South Asia. Two guided meditation sessions were conducted by Ven. K. Dhammaoshada Thero, representing the Nissaranavanaya Meditation Centre and its Chief Meditation Master Ven. U.
Dhammajiva, providing participants with firsthand experience of contemplative practice.
Dr. Kaushalya Perera delivered a presentation on the “Science of Mindfulness,” outlining its impact on stress reduction, decision-making, and emotional intelligence.
A session on mindful movement was conducted by Ms. Hubika Joshi, highlighting the importance of body-mind connection.
Continuing the Vesak commemorations, the Embassy, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka-Nepal Buddhist Association, hosted a Pre-Conference Event on Buddhism, Science, and Spirituality on 4 May 2026 in Colombo.
The event brought together distinguished scholars, spiritual leaders, and professionals to explore the intersection of ancient wisdom and modern scientific thought. The program commenced with the National Anthem, followed by introductory remarks by Mr. Krishan Buddhika. Welcome remarks were delivered by
professional practices. The Ambassador of Nepal delivered a special address, highlighting the importance of the upcoming International Research Symposium as a platform for intellectual and cultural exchange.
A panel discussion titled “Buddhism, Science, and Spirituality”, moderated by Dr. Padmasiri Ranawakarachchi, featured eminent panelists including Ven. Dr. Seela Gothami Therani, His Eminance Shyalpa Rinpoche, Dr. Vinya Ariyaratne, Dr. Bibek Sharma, Ven. Wetara Mahinda Thero. The discussion provided valuable insights into integrating spiritual wisdom with scientific understanding to address contemporary global challenges.
