COLOMBO : The Republic of Maldives commemorates the 60th anniversary of our independence on 26 July 2025, it is my profound honor to convey the respect and heartfelt appreciation of our people to the Government and people of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
Our two nations are bound not merely by proximity, but by centuries of shared history, cultural kinship, and enduring solidarity. It was in Colombo, in 1906, that the Maldives established its very first overseas representation — a testament to the centrality of Sri Lanka in our historical journey. It was again in Colombo, on the very day we attained independence in 1965, that we elevated that presence to an Embassy — the first of our newly sovereign state.
In the six decades since, the close kinship between our two peoples have flourished. We have deepened our partnerships the fields of trade, education, healthcare, tourism, air services, cultural exchange, and people-to-people connectivity. It is with fondness I remember the kindness of the Government and people of Sri Lanka during my official visit to Colombo as President in 2013. This, together with numerous other high-level visits between both countries have fermented the unwavering support our nations and people towards one another.
On this historic milestone, we look forward to moving hand in hand with Sri Lanka; as partners in development, as stewards of the Indian Ocean, and as neighbors whose futures are forever linked.
May the bonds between our peoples continue to grow in strength, solidarity, and shared purpose.
