COLOMBO : As we mark the 60th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Maldives, I extend my heartfelt greetings and warmest wishes to the people of the Maldives, both back home and those residing in Sri Lanka.
Our independence, achieved on 26 July 1965, was not merely a change in political status, it was the culmination of a determined, peaceful national movement led by visionary leaders who dreamed of a sovereign and self-reliant Maldives. On this occasion, we remember with deep respect the courage and foresight of our national heroes, like President late Ibrahim Nasir, whose leadership and diplomacy laid the foundation for a free and independent nation. We also honour the countless citizens whose quiet strength and unwavering patriotism carried us through that historic transition.
This milestone is also an opportunity to reflect on the enduring friendship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka. Long before we established diplomatic relations in 1965, our two countries were bonded by geography, shared ancestry, trade routes, and cultural ties. From ancient mariners and monks to modern-day students and entrepreneurs, the human connections between our islands nations have always been vibrant and deeply rooted.
Personally, my bond with Sri Lanka is one of genuine affection and gratitude. I spent part of my early education here, and like many Maldivians, I have experienced the hospitality and generosity of the people of Sri Lanka. For generations of Maldivians, Sri Lanka has been a second home, for learning, for healing, for growth and many more. We are equally proud of the many Sri Lankans who have played a vital role in the Maldives development, contributing across a wide range of sectors and supporting our economic and developmental progress.
Today, while we also celebrate the 60 years of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between our two countries, we reflect on a partnership that has matured and strengthened over time. Whether in education, trade, tourism, health, or regional cooperation, our bilateral ties have been guided by mutual respect, trust, and a shared vision for progress and prosperity.
The 60th Independence Day is not only a time for national pride; it is also a moment of appreciation for our closest neighbour. Sri Lanka has stood by us through challenges and triumphs, and we remain deeply thankful for that unwavering support.
Looking ahead, I am confident that strong ties between the Maldives and Sri Lanka will continue to grow and thrive in the years to come. Strengthened by our shared history and driven by common aspirations for a peaceful, prosperous, and resilient Indian Ocean region, our partnership holds great promise for the bright future.
