MALE : On this historic occasion marking 60 years since the Maldives gained
independence, I extend my heartfelt greetings to all Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka.
It was in Colombo on 26 July 1965, that the Maldives signed the agreement
that ended 78 years of British protection, paving the way for our emergence as a fully
independent and sovereign state. Sri Lanka, with whom we share deep historical and
cultural ties, was among the first countries to welcome our independence and establish
diplomatic relations.
Our bond, rooted in centuries of shared ancestry and cultural exchange, has
evolved into a comprehensive and dynamic partnership. Today, this partnership spans
diplomacy, trade, education and capacity building, healthcare, and defence.
Thousands of Maldivians benefit from Sri Lanka’s schools, universities and hospitals
with many proudly calling this country their second home. Our growing economic ties,
from undersea fibre-optic connections to expanding trade and investment, reflect the
modern dimension of our collaboration.
Defence cooperation remains a cornerstone of our partnership. Maldivian
personnel are regularly trained in Sri Lanka’s military institutions, and both nations
continue to work together to secure our shared Indian Ocean region.
Throughout history, and in more recent times – from the 2004 tsunami to the COVID-19 pandemic, and other regional and global developments – our two nations have stood together in solidarity. I am particularly grateful for Sri Lanka’s continued support for Maldivian nationals visiting and residing in Sri Lanka, including the facilitation of immigration and essential services, ensuring their welfare and
As we celebrate this diamond jubilee of our independence, we also honour it the enduring friendships that have supported our journey. The Maldives – Sri Lanka relationship stands as a testament to mutual respect, trust, and shared aspirations for peace and prosperity.
On behalf of the Government and people of the Maldives, I convey our sincere gratitude to Sri Lanka. May the strong ties between our two nations continue to thrive for generations to come.
