COLOMBO: Two parliamentarians from the Sri Lanka Makkal Congress have been suspended from the party for voting for the Colombo Port City bill which came up for a division on Thursday.
According to a decision taken by the Political Authority, the highest committee of the congress, Ali Sabri Raheem, MP for Puttalam and Ishak Rahman,MP for Anuradhapura have been suspended from the party.
Acting President of the congress N.M.Shaheed, attorney-at-law, told Colombo Times that at a previous meeting of the Political Authority, a decision was taken among the members of the party to refrain from voting for the Port City bill. “ These two members who represent our party at the parliament were expected to refrain from voting according to the decision taken at the Political Authority,” Shaheed said, adding that the members have also voted for the bill.
Shaheed said that he has called for explanation from the two parliamentarians and both are subject to a disciplinary inquiry soon.
The two suspended MPs had entered the parliament for the first time in their life in 2020
