COLOMBO: Fresh moves are being made by a group of social service activists to file a fundamental rights case in the Supreme Court to restrain the politicians who were affected by the violence after the 9th May 2022 attack after the Galle Face (GGG) violence from getting any compensation as promised by Public Security and Tourism Minister Prassana Ranatunga.
The group comprises Hilmy Ahamed, Ms Sharni Jayawardena, Mohamed Bishri Ghazzali , Ms Thasleema Dahalan and Mohamed Sham Nawas.
Speaking to Colombo Times,a member of the group, Hilmy Ahmed said: “ We will request the Supreme Court to suspend any such payments until all riot victims from Aluthgama, Gintota,to politicians Ampara, Digana and Minuwangoda are fully compensated.”
“ Towards this we will file a complaint at the Human Rights Commision on Monday June 6. Requests for details of compensation paid by govt. to the above referred riot victims have been sent to the Divisional Secretaries of the respective districts under the right to information (RTI) act. They will have to respond within two weeks. After that the FR application will be filed in the Supreme Court along with our complaint to HRC.”
The Fundamental Rights application will be supported by senior attorney Shiraz Noordeen
