COLOMBO : Parliamentarian Imthiaz Bakeer Markar met with Hussein El Saharty, Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Sri Lanka recently.
During the discussions, Markar pointed out the significant impact of Egyptians such as Ptolemy who mapped one of the first maps of Sri Lanka and the role of Orabi Pasha in setting up the Zahira College in Colombo.
The Ambassador affirmed that Egypt stands ready to strengthen educational exchange programmes in multiple academic fields with historic Al-Azhar University in Cairo for Sri Lankan students.
A framed picture of Masjidul Abrar of Beruwala, the 1100-year-old first recorded mosque in Sri Lanka was gifted to Ambassador El Saharty.
