COLOMBO – Kusal Mendis, Sri Lanka’s newly appointed One Day International (ODI) captain, expressed optimism during his first pre-match press conference ahead of the crucial ICC World Cup clash against Australia in Lucknow.
When asked if he would change his batting style as the captain, Mendis stated, “I won’t alter my current batting style. I didn’t have a specific plan before coming to India. After playing two practice games, I felt confident in the good wickets here. I’ll adjust when needed, but I plan to stick to my style. I don’t feel pressure from the captaincy. I know that if I score runs, we have a chance to win.”
Regarding his recent form, Mendis said, “I haven’t made major changes to my technique. I’ve worked hard on playing balls in my strong areas. I’m pleased with my performance and aim to maintain my form in the upcoming matches.”
Mendis also shared his excitement about being the captain, saying, “I’m pretty happy with the captaincy role. I’ve already captained in practice games and will continue batting as I have been. I’m ready to play according to the team’s needs.”
Commenting on the Indian wickets, Mendis noted, “The wickets here are good, and our bowlers are giving their best. Our batters have performed exceptionally against strong opponents.”
He expressed concern about an off-field situation in the second innings of a high-scoring Pakistan-Sri Lanka match, attributing it to the extreme heat in India.
Mendis spoke about the conditions, saying, “The conditions here are similar to what we have in Sri Lanka, which is an advantage for us. Australia has experienced players familiar with Indian conditions due to IPL and other tours. The wickets in India are slightly better, and I believe our fast bowlers have performed well. I hope they will do even better in the upcoming matches.”
When asked about the opening batsmen, Mendis supported Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka, emphasizing their specific roles and the potential benefits of stability in the initial overs.
Regarding Matheesha Pathirana’s bowling, Mendis acknowledged his abilities and expected a strong comeback after recovering from injury. He also expressed hope for the return of former captain Dasun Shanaka, considering him a significant asset.
Mendis showed confidence in the team’s spinners, Maheesh Theekshana and emerging talent Dunith Wellalage, along with the versatile Dhananjaya de Silva and part-time bowler Charith Asalanka, and their adaptability in various game situations.
Kusal Mendis, the 26th ODI captain of Sri Lanka, is ready to lead his team in a crucial phase of the ICC World Cup with unwavering belief in their capabilities.
