COLOMBO- The Islamic Crescent Committee which met at the Colombo Grand Mosque announced that Sri Lankan Muslims should celebrate their Islamic New Year on Wednesday, August 11.
Chairman of the Colombo Grand Mosque, Thaufiq Zubyr said that the committee which was assigned to decide the first day of the Muharram said it found that the crescent was not sighted on Monday, August 9. Therefore, the committee unanimously decide to observe the New Year from Wednesday.
Zubyr said the month of Dul Hajj will end on Tuesday and the Muharram month will begin on Wednesday
Officials from the Jamiyyathul Ulama, Memon Mosque, department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs, Colombo Grand Mosque and representatives from mosques in Colombo.
